Lightning flashes to, or nearby, structures are hazardous to people, to the structures themselves, their contents and installations. The possible types of damage are injury to living beings due to step and touch voltage; physical damage (fire, explosion, mechanical destruction, chemical and radiological release) due to lightning current effects and failure of internal systems due to lightning electromagnetic impulse (LEMP). This is why the application of lightning protection measures can be essential. The need for protection, the economic benefits of selecting and installing adequate protection measures should be determined in terms of risk management.

A lightning protection system designed and installed to the latest British standard serves to reduce the risk of damage to a structure, the people in and around it and the systems on and within it. All Vectis employees that design lightning protection systems have proven knowledge of BS EN 62305. This design competence is accredited independently by the Association of Technical Lightning and Access Specialists (ATLAS).

Regular inspection and testing is essential, to ensure that lightning protection systems remain in a safe and effective condition; in accordance with the relevant British standard. A system which is not properly maintained might not be effective in discharging lightning safely to ground; or prevent currents and overvoltage's from damaging electrical systems and equipment.
Vectis’ inspection and testing engineers are fully competent in undertaking the detailed inspection and testing of all lightning protection systems. Here at Vectis, we will provide certificates of inspection detailing our findings, plus details of any repairs required to return systems to a serviceable condition within 24 hours of the initial test and inspect.
IEC/BS EN 62305 – Protection against lightning
IEC 63205 is the recognised worldwide standard for lightning protection system (LPS) design, installation and maintenance. BS EN 62305 is the British edition of the European standard, and is derived from the IEC document.
BS 6651 – Code of practice for the protection of structures against lightning (withdrawn)
BS 6651 was the British standard prior to the introduction of BS EN 62305. First issued in 1985, it was revised in 1992, 1999 and further amended in 2005; before being withdrawn on 31st August 2008.
